modern poppies
sun prairie mural fest 2025

Sun Prairie, WI

"Modern Poppies" is my creation for Sun Prairie's inaugural Mural Fest put on by Urban Art Bloom. Nine artists, including myself were selected to each create a mural on the side of the Washington Mills building in Sun Prairie. As the birth place of Georgie O'Keffe, we were each inspired by her work and life. I began my design knowing I wanted to highlight poppies as they are my favorite flower to paint and an iconic flower done by O'Keeffe. After that I knew I wanted to put in Jimson Weed flowers, the white trio in the top corner. O'Keeffe's "Jimson Weed" painting was the first I saw by her when I was a child and its the first that always comes to mind when I picture her art. After that I added flowers as I went, selecting ones that have personal meaning and ones that I felt fit the composition and added colors that I wanted. The teal stripe down the middle was initially to bring visual interest leading the eye up the piece, but it has really transformed into a beam of light as the community inquired about it more and I had really great discussions during the painting week.
